This project offers the possibility of short term benefits to a very few local employees. The long term, unconscionable effect comes in the form of sulfuric acid drainage into some of the cleanest fresh water in the world. I appreciate the efforts of the coalition fighting to prevent a mine that should have never been granted one permit. Please let me know how I can support the new appeal.

Unfortunatly this Judge cares little for environmental concerns. I am a member of the Anglers of the Ausable, FFF, TU, and the Sierra Club. We went through a similar frustrating and lengthy court case involving Kennecott Eagle Minerals. Same basic results, drilling occurred within feet of the south branch of the Ausable river. Their access roads have disturbed the integrety of the land in the Mason tract and have forever changed the environment in the area.

Efforts need to be focused on Kennecott Eagle Minerals and their ability to obtain land and/or mineral rights. Especially on environmentally fragile areas which will suffer permanent damage or destruction. Hopefully the trout will not be seriously impacted by this thoughtless decision. The DEQ and the MDNR have clearly let us down again to say nothing of our court system protecting our fragile and declining environment.

We feel your Pain and share your dissappointment.

Regards,
David Klotz

This has got to stop, nothing is sacred anymore, these same people would drill their own ancestors bones for anything they could get. This is why i'm moving back to michigan to fight these corporate monsters and protect one of the truly unique places on this earth. Also to fight a state government that is selling its state to the highest bidder faster than it can realize the effects.

What does the Rio Tinto board think of the potential water and air pollution caused by the sulfide mine? Is the project worth the effects of the pollution?

Good Luck to you all. I know jobs vs. environment is a hard sell in this economy. Future thinking is out for immediate gratification.
Rio Tinto, if I am not mistaken, is a Malaysian company and so the income generated by this spoilage may not even stay in the United States. Where are these minerals going? Are the funds generated by their sale going to stay in the UP? If not, to me, this should be a violation of our national security; selling of our limited natural resources for another countries economic gain.

I am encouraged to hear from afar that the Haul Rd has yielded to wild lands for now. Having spent a great deal of time on the ground there- in the adventures and oft misadventures of finding Marv's camp- it is known to me that a wild life will survive. And some people may not understand that humans can be wildlife too, but it's true. Participate. The Ishpenopeming highlands, where water comes out of the ground, is the place I learned that. I am celebrating the corridor of woods that will remain rural, wild, and in silence, and the people who retreat there to find it.
