Greg Brown’s newest album is a live recording of his August 2005 concert at the Peterson Auditorium
in Ishpeming, Michigan, which he performed for free to benefit the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve.
Yellow Dog is a raw, reverent commentary on the times we live in as well as a testament to the artist’s love for the wild lands and waters of the Upper Peninsula. This album captures an intimate evening of ‘notebook songs’, including three never-before-recorded; “Better Days”, “Oily Boys” and “All of Those Things”. Also featured are re-workings of old favorites like “Dream Cafe” and “Canned Goods”, and early versions of songs that later appeared on Greg Brown’s recent Red House release The Evening Call.
A British mining company called Kennecott proposed to drill a metallic sulfide mine within the Yellow Dog watershed. Area citizens have banded together to work with the Preserve because of concerns that sulfide mining could damage the ecosystem. Byproducts of sulfide mining include sulfuric acid and heavy metals. Greg Brown has donated all profits from this album to the Watershed Preserve in their efforts to protect this beautiful wild area.
