Greg Brown’s newest album is a live recording of his August 2005 concert at the Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming, Michigan, that he performed for free to benefit the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve. Yellow Dog is a raw, reverent commentary on the times we live in as well as a testament to the artist’s love for the wild lands and waters of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Internationally renowned musician Greg Brown routinely fishes the Yellow Dog River. "I'm proud to be here. Proud to stand up for a little river," Brown said during the performance. Greg Brown's songs have been performed by the likes of Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Ani DiFranco, Lucinda Williams, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
A British mining company called Kennecott proposed to drill a metallic sulfide mine within the Yellow Dog watershed. Area citizens have banded together to work with the Preserve because of concerns that sulfide mining could damage the ecosystem. By-products of sulfide mining include sulfuric acid and heavy metals.
Because the use of bleached, virgin paper is a major cause of water pollution, the packaging for Yellow Dog was created with 100% post consumer waste fiber, 100% chlorine free process, and was manufactured with non-polluting, wind-generated energy. All profits from the album will benefit the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve in their effort to keep metallic sulfide mining out of Michigan.
Earthwork Music, which will be releasing the album, is a small Michigan-based independent record label, songsters collective and community of friends. Believing in the intrinsic and historical power of music to raise both community and self-awareness, Earthwork Music is proud to be part of the effort to preserve and protect Michigan’s ecological heritage. Yellow Dog is the first release in the Earthwork Archive Series.
