Procedures
Procedures for collecting data were utilized according to standards set by MDEQ Stream Crossing Watershed Procedure Manual. Data survey sheets are used to record baseline physical characteristics of the site. Dissolved oxygen, pH, conductance, and temperature are all recorded and photos are taken upstream and downstream from the site. Macro-invertebrates are sampled because they are bio-indicators of water quality and are taken from a variety of bug habitats. Observations are made at each site, such as changes in the banks, tree canopy, and wildlife sightings. Post-site analysis of macro-invertebrates takes place and identification using a dichotomous key assists in scoring the river. All data is recorded and filed for analysis. Our program follows the State guidelines for procedure and quality assurance. However, our program differs in sampling policy. It is typical to sample macro-invertebrates and preserve them in alcohol. We do not kill the bugs but rather let them go. If there is a species of great importance, we document its existence through film and video. Take a look at more resources.

YDWP has been collecting water quality data for over four years and and has a great wealth of information. Our Project Coordinator for this program has compiled data from 2003 to 2006 in a 300+page report for dissemination. The report includes maps, full color, site survey data sheets, and a comprehensive approach to protecting a watershed. This report is invaluable and has been purchased by government agencies, universities, other watershed councils, and the public. If you wish to purchase a copy of the Yellow Dog River Watershed Final Report 2003-2006, please give us a call or email us.
